Ah! Our final caterpillar of 2013 becomes a chrysalis . . .

Our remaining caterpillar made its chrysalis today on the twig that we had placed in its container weeks ago. This tiger swallowtail chrysalis will sit on our back porch through all the winter months and (hopefully) a spectacular large yellow and black butterfly will emerge next May.

Two swallowtail chrysalises: the one on the left is smaller and is a black swallowtail chrysalis; the one on the right is bigger and is the tiger swallowtail chrysalis. (click on the Home page to see a photo of a black swallowtail butterfly and a tiger swallowtail butterfly or scroll through to earlier blog photos) Both of these chrysalises will overwinter on our unheated back porch.
