Yeah! Overwintering black swallowtail butterfly is born!

Just returned from a trip to the Chicago Botanic Garden to find out that the black swallowtail butterfly had emerged in the container on my back porch! This chrysalis has been stored on our unheated porch since last fall. Notice the empty chrysalis attached to the stick below the butterfly in the container.

My friend Claris and I released the butterfly, which is a female Eastern black swallowtail. We set her on the dill and she flew off into the sky a few minutes later. Hope she finds a boyfriend tonight and begins a new cycle of life soon. My dill is ready for her eggs!
