First red admiral egg of the new season hatches!

I watched the red admiral butterfly land on the Pennsylvania pellitory sprouting in my yard on May 16. The egg was green. It darkened over the weekend, and it's clear this morning because it's empty. The tiny spiky black caterpillar is somewhere on the plant doing what it does. It's busy eating!

The red admiral egg above is now clear because the caterpillar ate its way out this morning! The egg hatched five days after it was deposited on the plant.
