First monarch caterpillar of 2013 is born!

It took almost a week for the caterpillar to hatch out of its egg because of the cold nights and some chilly days we have been experiencing in Chicagoland. This morning I watched the caterpillar eat its egg case (see the lower three photos). Two hours later it crawled under the leaf to begin eating there. I flipped the leaf over to take the little guy's picture (see photo directly below). The caterpillar will eat for about two weeks and then make its beautiful green and gold chrysalis!
